This collection includes scanned letters, correspondence, and other manuscript items tied to 19th Century American writers and housed at Middlebury College Special Collections. Many famous names and literary careers are represented inside, including Ambrose Bierce, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, Mark Twain, Ralph Waldo Emerson, etc. According to the project’s managers, Transcribing these letters helps support a variety of research into the history of American literature and will make these unique documents more widely accessible to a global audience of readers. It is a representative case of crowdsourcing project in literature that can inspire others to follow.
